Efe Usanmaz is a Doctoral Researcher at the Department of Political Science at the VUB. His research interests cover EU-Turkey relations, Turkish foreign policy and democratization processes.
He is conducting research on the issues in democratization process in Turkey with a particular focus on party politics and civic engagement. More specifically, his research intends to elucidate why the democratization processes in developing countries have a tendency to be affected by power groups, often resulting in transformations into illiberal democracies.
Efe holds an MA in European Studies from Maastricht University where he studied as a Jean Monnet scholar from Turkey. There he focused on the EU foreign, security and defence policies. He conducted a research on the CSDP missions in the Western Balkans.
Prior to his Master's he completed his Bachelor's Degree in Political Science with a minor in International Relations at Bilkent University, Ankara.
