biographical note
Silvia Erzeel is a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Political Science of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and a member of RHEA – Centre for Gender & Diversity. In May 2012, she successfully defended her PhD thesis entitled ‘Presence Theory and Beyond. An Empirical Study of Legislators’ Acting on behalf of Women in European Democracies’. In the fall of 2012, she was a visiting scholar at the University of Amsterdam.
Silvia’s research can be situated at the intersection of three larger research fields: gender and politics, political representation and party politics. Her main focus is on explaining and understanding changing patterns of women’s substantive and descriptive representation in Europe. In that regard, she studies when, how and why traditional actors (women, leftwing parties) as well as non-traditional actors (men, conservative parties) participate in the representation of women’s interests. In addition, Silvia has published on the impact of gender quotas on recruitment strategies of parties and the perception of gender quotas among European legislators. Moving from the elite to the mass level, she has written papers on sex differences in political talk and in rightwing voting in Belgium. Her research is mostly quantitative in nature, with a focus on survey research and multivariate statistics, but she also makes use of social network analysis, in-depth interviewing and content analysis.
